Tuesday October 3, 2017
Today we listened to the story “Red is Best” by Kathy Stinson.
Students were asked to think about what colour they think is best and why.
Here are a few examples of what they said.
In Math we introduced Venn Diagrams and tried to sort our shoes.
We decided to sort by: shoes that had laces and shoes that had Velcro, or both.
Ask me about: What category were your
shoes in?
Thursday –Terry Fox Run! Wear your Royal Oak Blue!
On
Tuesday, October 3rd, Royal Oak School and William D. Pratt School
will be participating in the Terry Fox Run. Students will gather on the
field between the two schools to take part in the annual 30-minute run, which
is scheduled to begin at 10:30am. Students attending afternoon
Kindergarten are welcome to attend, if they are accompanied by a supervising
adult.
On this
day please ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather
(including running shoes). If the weather is poor, students will walk
inside the school during their PE class time.
If you
can, we are asking that each child bring in a “Toonie for Terry” for the Terry
Fox Foundation during the week of September 26 - October 3rd. This foundation
helps support ongoing Cancer research.
All
parents/guardians who are interested in joining their child/children in this
event are more than welcome.
We do
require a fair number of volunteers for this event to ensure its success.
If you have security clearance and if you are able to volunteer during the run
time, kindly contact our school Volunteer Coordinator at rosvolunteers@gmail.com.
Thank
you for your continued support.

We Need Volunteers:
Calgary
Reads Volunteer Training
Royal Oak School is in
need of more volunteers for our Calgary Reads programs. Please see the
information below about how to volunteer.
Wee
Reads
Wee Read is about
reading aloud and sharing the joy of reading with Kindergarten and Grade 1
students. Reading volunteers would need to commit to 30 minutes per week for 8
weeks. In this 30 minutes, volunteers will have the opportunity to work with
two students either in Kindergarten or Grade 1.
If you are interested
in volunteering for this program, a valid police clearance through the CBE is
required. Interested volunteers are asked to please attend a Wee Reads training
session on Wednesday October 18th from 2:30 -
3:50pm. The training sessions will be offered at Royal Oak
School. If you are interested in attending, please contact Sarah Power at sapower@cbe.ab.ca and RSVP by Monday evening, October
16th.
Read
Up
The Read Up program
helps struggling readers in grades one and two strengthen their reading skills
at a critical time in their cognitive development. Volunteers receive advanced
training and commit to two 45-minute sessions each week for a total of about 40
sessions. Volunteers must have previously worked as a Wee Read volunteer or
have an Education background. Please contact Sarah Power sapower@cbe.ab.ca if you are interested in enrolling
in Read Up training with Calgary Reads. The training is approximately 4 hours
at the Calgary Reads office.
